USIAA Update

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Daniel Lalonde

Well that time has come...after having had the pleasure of leading the US Alumni for 3 years, I will be stepping down and making room for a new President, who will take charge on April 1st, or let's say April 2nd to make it real. My 3 years as head of the US Alumni has been a very special treat for me, as I have met many interesting and talented people and worked (yes, it is work!) with an outstanding team both at the center and in the regions.

To all of you, I offer many thanks for your time, passion and devotion to INSEAD, it is YOU that make INSEAD such a wonderful place and brand. I will be succeeded by a very talented and successful alumni, Tommaso Trionfi, MBA D'90,, who is none other than a living example of the "transcultural executive," a term coined by our charismatic dean, Frank Brown. I have known Tommaso for some time now and he was highly recommended by our President Search Committee. So, while this is not adieu (I will stay active), I thank all of you for a wonderful 3 year experience and wish much success to Tommaso and your current executive team.

Warm regards,

Daniel Lalonde, MBA '91, President

Welcome to Carol Cunningham, our new National Coordinator

Carol Cunningham will be taking over as USIAA National Coordinator. Carol is familiar to some INSEAD alumni who knew her when she was in Fountaineblue accompanying her husband, Ian, who attended the MBA programme at INSEAD in 1994 (J). While in Fontainebleau she worked very closely with Brigitte Morel our current Midwest Regional President. After leaving France she moved to NYC and filled in for Carol Grayson at the INSEAD, New York office in 1995. She did mostly admissions work but also gave assistance to the USIAA. She is very excited to be back working with the INSEAD alumni.

Carol has a BS in Political Science from the University of Maine, Orono and an MBA from University of British Columbia at Vancouver. She is currently a full time, stay at home mother of four children ages 11 to 3. Her previous work experience includes working as the Human Resource Director for a pizza franchising company in Ann Arbor, MI, Assistant to the Finance Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Dallas, Texas and the Executive Assistant to US House of Representative, John R. McKernan, Jr., in Washington DC.

Carol Cunningham

Although Carol loves skiing, sailing, playing tennis and traveling, most of her hobbies and activities are currently shared with her family. She spends many hours a week watching her son, Monty, play hockey. He?s the starting goalie for his travel team, which means many trips to surrounding towns and a few overnights to towns outside Toronto. Her daughter, Alex, is an avid horseback rider and is also on a synchronized swimming team. Corinna plays soccer and is just starting to compete in gymnastics and Paige keeps her busy with her many different personalities (she?s 3).

Ian (?94J) is currently the CEO of SceneGenesis, Inc. He is an IT fellow and was just named Rochester?s E-Business Executive of the Year. While at INSEAD he ran the Paris Marathon and is still training for and running marathons as well as playing hockey.

Carol and her family are currently settled in Rochester, New York but in addition to living in Fountaineblue, she has lived in Virginia, New Hampshire, New York City, British Columbia, Michigan, Texas, Washington DC, and Berlin Germany, to name a few. Some of her greatest memories though are the ones she had while living in Fountaineblue. ?I met so many wonderful and interesting people with Ian while he was at INSEAD. I?m really excited to be back working with the INSEAD community. I?m also a big fan of the cultural richness of the INSEAD programme and am happy to be a part of promoting it in the US. ?

You can contact Carol by email.

Thank you, Renita!

In this month of many transitions for the USIAA, we would be remiss in not acknowledging the many contributions of our outgoing national coordinator Renita Kalhorn, MBA '95. Renita has served as the USIAA coordinator for the past year and has been instrumental in facilitating connections with alumni, amongst alumni, and with Insead itself. In addition to managing the steady growth of our alumni base and breaking in the new members of the national team (including yours truly,) Renita also implemented our highly successful transition to a 12-month rolling membership. This past February, Renita was pivotal in the planning of our annual National Meeting in New York, which would not have been possible without her input. Renita is a true Renaissance individual, whose passions include being a classical pianist, accomplishment in the martial arts, and establishing her own personal coaching consultancy. On behalf of all of us on the USIAA executive committee, I thank Renita for all her service to the USIAA over the past year and wish her many sweet notes for the future.

Renita Kalhorn

A thank you from Canadian Alumni

We have not forgotten the generosity of USIAA in supporting Canadian-American Week 2006. My sincerest apologies for the delay in sending you this email. The week was a huge success, in part because of your help. We raised over ?1000 through individual alumni contributions, and over ?5000 from corporate sponsors. Students contributed about ?6000 in purchases of tickets and t-shirts. All of our events were a big hit, particularly the "Calgary Stampede" Rodeo Party. But just as enjoyable were the "Jazz Fest", the geography tournament, the Halloween pumpkin carving contest and kids' party, the Thanksgiving dinner with guest speaker Caroline Firstbrook from Accenture, the hot-dog eating contest, and the poker tournament!

I've attached a collage of photos from the week, and the full set can be viewed here.

I Know What I Want To Do ? Now How Do I Get The Work?

6:00pm , Thursday April 12th
Alliance Française
1345 Bush Street (between Larkin and Polk)
San Francisco , CA 94109

Finding work can be a daunting task. Thousands of people may reply to a single job ad; the competition can be fierce. It's easy to get frustrated when you've answered 200 job ads for which you feel eminently qualified and received little or no response whatsoever.

In today's job market, the name of the game is to know what, where and to whom you are selling and target your proactive strategy ? and your pitch ? to the right audience: namely the people in a position to decide to hire you.

Peter Jacobs (MBA '92) will provide the tools to do just that. Attendees will

  • Learn about creative ways to find work BESIDES answering published job ads
  • Learn new strategies to gather information necessary to make an informed decision and adapt your "pitch"
  • Learn how to avoid the 3 most damaging errors people commit when designing an "audio logo" or "elevator pitch."

Don't miss this opportunity to gain new skills and develop tools that will be useful throughout the rest of your career!

Agenda:
6:00 - 6:45: Networking, Drinks & Appetizers
