USIAA Update

Dear Alumni,

2007 has been certainly an exciting year for the INSEAD community in general and in the US in particular. The School now has a physical presence here in the US, which I believe is an excellent start to continue to build our brand awareness in our country. Frank Brown has kept us wel informed of all the various projects and successes of the school around the world, from Singapore to Abu Dhabi. A growing number of alumni are joining our association and we have had many great events which have attracted people from many different horizons. The latest highlight in New York was the Jeffrey Sachs event, organized by Shivani, where Jeffrey presented his work relating to severe poverty in the world. Earlier, in March, we had our most well attended event ever with over 250 people in New York at the Louis Vuitton hosted by our then President Daniel Lalonde.

And finally there is going to be the faboulos Winter ball again thanks to Raj and Wenke: "una notte scintillante" on December 8th in NYC to which you are all invited. What a great way to finish the year!

2008 is going to be even more exciting, there are many new projects in the works. Stay tuned: from new sport challenges with Salamander cups to be won, to several INSEAD professors coming to the US and presenting to our alumni network. The will be our ongoing meetings and events on a wide variety of different subjects and some other surprises as well.

The best way to keep up to date with our activities is to visit our web site on http://www.inseadusa.com.

I encourage you to join our community and participate to make it yours and also have a great time!

I wish you all happy holidays and a great New Year!

Tommaso, MBA '91, President USIAA

Dear Alumni,

As you know our newsletter is now a quarterly publication. In the three months since our last newsletter we have had a lot of interesting happenings in our INSEAD Community.

Our new website, replete with blogs, events, networks, career opportunities is becoming a destination for our US alumni community. We have even had alumni from outside the US request guest memberships so that they can keep track of what is going on in the US. We are always happy to receive your comments and suggestions, positive and negative, about how to improve or enhance the value of our online presence. We are also looking for sponsorships for the website, so that we can continue to develop new capabiities online. Website sponsors will receive prominent displays on selected webpages. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming a sponsor.

The US office was launched with much fanfare on 29 October. Frank Brown was present for the announcement and former USIAA President Kevin Ryan offered his newly renovated Manhattan apartment for the welcoming celebration. Mary Lee Reiley was named the new Director of External Relations for the Americas.

We are planning to launch a 'get in touch' campaign to reach out to the more than 2000 INSEAD alumni in the US. We want to make sure we have up-to-date contact information for each and every alumnus/a. We hope to engage people from each of our 10 regions, and alums from each promotion to be able to contact every one on our list. If you are interested in helping out with that activity, either for your region or your promotion, please let us know.

On behalf of the INSEAD USA national team, I wish you all the best for the holiday season.

Regards,

Bob Stillerman , MBA '77, VP Communications

Happenings in the INSEAD Community

INSEAD Opens Americas Office in New York

On October 29, we celebrated the opening of our first Americas office in New York. The event brought together more than 100 alumni and friends of the school to celebrate this milestone at Kevin Ryan's (MBA’90) home in Manhattan. The event  also celebrated the launch of Dean Frank Brown’s book, The Global Business Leader: Practical Advice for Success in a Transcultural Marketplace.

The office opening was made possible thanks to the help of our alumni and some corporate sponsors. A special thanks to Alastair Tedford (MBA’87) and his firm, Albion Investors LLC, who were the primary supporters of our new location at 75 Rockefeller Plaza on the 15th floor.

Our presence in the Americas will allow us to increase our alumni activities, build brand awareness and expand our activities in Executive Education. Mary Lee Rieley will be heading the office as Executive Director of External Relations for the Americas. Mary-Lee will be working closely with Sarah Robertson, who continues in her role as Development Director, Americas. Professor J. Stewart Black will lead our efforts in Executive Education in the region as the new Associate Dean of Executive Development Programmes for the Americas along with Stephanie Comenge, Director of Partner Development.  On December 7 a group of alums will be having lunch in one of the conference rooms with Mary Lee to discuss the roles of the staff  in the Americas and plans for future growth.

“The opening of our Americas office underscores our mission to offer business education that brings together people, cultures and ideas from around the world,” said J. Frank Brown, Dean of INSEAD.  “By establishing a presence in the U.S., we will not only be able to extend our reach in the executive education sector, but also continue to foster relationships with our extensive alumni base in the Americas.”

Mary Lee Reiley, Director of External Relations for the Americas

INSEAD Professor to speak on Strategic Agility

Successful companies often become victims of their own success: when their business matures, they find it impossible to renew themselves. CEOs and corporate management teams are under attack – their tenure is shorter and shorter- and the performance demanded from them higher and higher.  To regain and maintain growth they need to learn to thrive on change and disruption, and strategic agility becomes a key capability.

INSEAD’s Professor of Business Strategy Yves Doz, and Mr Mikko Kosonen, former CIO and CSO of Nokia, and currently EVP of the Finnish Innovation Fund, will give a series of presentations in 2008 on the theme of Strategic Agility, around the publication of their new book  Fast Strategy: How Strategic Agility will help you stay ahead of the Game, Wharton School Publishing, 2007.

Please join them for a special reception with a keynote speaker, presentation, Q&A session and book signing on the following dates in 2008:

  • 15 January 6-8pm in London
  • 5 February 6-8pm in New York
  • 7 February 6-8pm in San Francisco

For more information, and to register to these events, please contact Muriel Larvaron at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, Tel: ++33.1.60.72.42.43.

It’s Holiday Giving Time!

It is not too late to give to INSEAD and have it count as a deduction for the 2007 tax year.  It is now possible to make a donation to the annual fund by credit card payment through Paypal.  You can choose to have your gift go to a number of INSEAD scholarships, research programs, building programs – or contribute to your class reunion gift. Just click on http://www.insead.edu/alumni/imef/.  Thank you!

2007 Fundraising Results – Participation is Up!

INSEAD publishes their annual fundraising information based on an August 31 fiscal year that conforms to a “school year” calendar.  As of August 31, 2007 close to 200,000 euros was collected for INSEAD’s Annual Fund from Alumni with a 24% participation rate.

How do we compare to other countries with sizable amounts of INSEAD alums?
The UK is tops with 775,000 euros added to the Annual Fund (17% participation), followed by France at 500,000 euros (15% participation) and the Netherlands with over 400k (39% participation).

Help us keep our participation percentage at a respectable level – give to INSEAD!

Do you have any good ideas for fundraising?

With the appointment last August of Christopher Redo as the new Executive Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, INSEAD is carefully examining how they approach Alums for fundraising activities and class gifts.  If you have any thoughts, complaints or suggestions regarding INSEAD’s fundraising in the US, please contact Sharyanne McSwain, the US Trustee on the INSEAD Alumni Fund Board. We need you to contribute to our fundraising efforts!

INSEAD Career Contacts

If you belong to any enterprise that frequently or occasionally hires MBA’s, you may be willing to talk about your organization to our recent graduates aspiring to a career in the U.S. They would be interested in learning about your organization, its policies, practices, opportunities, etc. The dialog could be by phone or by e-mail, or even face-to-face, if it can be arranged. Please confirm your willingness to help our fellow alumni through communicating with them for a few minutes to an hour, by providing me your name, organization, phone # and e-mail address.

An update from Nat Criou

You may remember Nat after her encounter with a sperm whale on a sailboat last summer. Well, Nat has gone from an extremely big to an extremely small opponent as she was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago.

Her disease is unique and required international attention. The INSEAD alumni network proved invaluable as it opened doors for her at renowned international hospitals in the UK and France, and supported her psychologically throughout this ordeal by sending her "Get Well" gifts, regular cards and numerous emails. She hadn't thought that the USIAA could also help save the lives of its members! You can all be proud of your family. Your support is the lifeblood that keeps it going. Remember to renew your membership or sign up at: http://www.inseadusa.com/.

The cancer grew so attached to her reproductive tract that it decided to keep it as a souvenir. As she had not planned on being a tourist ground for cancer and menopausal at 32, she sought help to preserve her fertility. This affected her so much that she worked with top physicians in the field and an award-winning team from Transvideo Studios to make a documentary to raise public awareness of these solutions. Fertility preservation options are little known to patients and physicians alike and many patients embark on irreversible sterilizing therapies before exploring options.

You can see the short video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFGg3yyDNYs.

Nat is doing well and counts on the frosted Mini-Nats to keep her spirits up! If she can dodge an 80-ton mammal, what's with a bunch of microscopic malignant cells! You can read about Nat's story and make a donation to sarcoma research at stories.beatsarcoma.org.

The Jeffrey Sachs talk on Solving Global Poverty (November 13) at Citi’s downtown location was a great success. We had about 100 people in attendance to listen to Prof. Sachs. His challenge to all of us was to use our business skills and our company products to help countries which are stuck in poverty. He welcomed us to contact him directly with ideas. He can be reached at via email.

As a part of “doing our bit”, the $3,000 which we collected in ticket sales are all being donated to the Millennium Villages project in Africa. To find out more about the project and how you can help, log onto: http://www.millenniumvillages.org/
