USIAA Update

Dear Fellow Alumni,

I have just returned from the East Coast and a wonderfully energizing National meeting. I can assure you that your US leadership team is enthusiastic, motivated and interested in increasing the value of the INSEAD "brand." They are also keen about bringing our alumni together for social as well as business activities that are relevant to our lives. It was my pleasure meeting many of the "newcomers" to the team, and renewing those distance relationships that we all develop because of our geographic dispersion.

Additionally, I can report that Dean Brown, who joined our meeting for the better part of the day, is committed to a strong relationship with the alumni associations and will be increasing his focus on the US in the months ahead. Of the many adjectives and superlatives that have been applied to Dean Brown, I find that his approachability, his practical nature and his "Frank"- ness make him a great asset to our school and our association.

Anne Holbach, in her summary below, gives you an idea of some of the topics and issues we addressed during the meeting, as well as some of the fun we had in spending time together. Daniel Lalonde, our National president, made sure we weren't thirsty, as he generously hosted a Champagne reception on the Friday evening of our weekend session. (Click here for photos.)

Thanks go out to Yusuf and his team, as well as the New York-based TriState (plus PA) team for their help in organizing and executing a series of successful events.

I encourage you to get active and involved to the extent it makes sense for your individual situation. I think you will find receptive welcomes no matter which directions you choose.

Happenings in the INSEAD Community

USIAA National Meeting + dinner

On Saturday, February 24, 2007, almost two dozen INSEAD alumni met in New York for the US Alumni Association?s National Meeting. This was the thirteenth meeting held by the USIAA, and the first attended by our INSEAD Dean.

Champagne reception Four Pres's

USIAA President Daniel Lalonde was our generous host in the LVMH Tower, the breathtaking 1999 building designed by Prtizker-laureate architect Christian de Portzamparc.

Meeting participants came from all across the USA: Aleksandra Bozic, Boston; Darach Chapman, Miami; Ellen Cohan, NY; Michel Darnaud, San Francisco; J.J. Doran, NY; Anne Holbach NY; Renita Kalhorn, NY; Shivani Kannabhiran, NY; Yusuf Khapra, NY; Daniel Lalonde, NY; Michael London, NY: Sanny Makki, NY; Sharyanne McSwain, NY; Brigitte Morel-Curran, Chicago; Frances Pordes, Denver; Richard Pulliam, Washington, DC; Jag Rao, NY; Bob Stillerman, San Francisco; Matt Williamson, NY; Lydia Zaininger, NY.

The group discussed US alumni activities organized in our ten geographic regions in 2006, and analyzed plans for 2007 events. The group looked at the public relations activities in the US in 2006; 2006 finances and forecasts for 2007; the US website, data base, newsletters and alumni communications in the US.

The group identified major areas of focus for 2007:

  • the US Association will improve the US website and data base used to communicate with alumni across the US.
  • the US Association will be focusing on membership in the US Association in 2007, with the membership goal of 50% of US-based alums.
  • the US Association will continue to rotate alumni volunteers in and out of the organizational structure. In 2006, the Association welcomed new volunteer alumni to 12 of the 22 national positions; among the regional heads, 7 out of 10 were new in 2006. This new wave of enthusiasm and fresh ideas is a healthy sign of a vibrant, energized alumni association.

Dean Frank Brown of INSEAD participated in the afternoon session. He led a lively exchange on various subjects such as the INSEAD brand in the USA; public relations in the US; the INSEAD US office; the school?s finances and endowment; website and data base issues; careers services; executive programs; and centers for excellence.

Rolf Abdon, Chairman of the IAF (INSEAD Alumni Fund) provided an update on IAF activities and led a discussion of alumni giving.

Sarah Robertson, Director of Development for North America and Daniel Labrecque, President of the Canadian Alumni Association, were also in attendance.

Following the eight-hour session, the participants regrouped for dinner and INSEAD camaraderie at Tuscan Square in midtown Manhattan. And, of course, a hardy group of participants then continued on to explore lower Manhattan nightlife.

Guggenheim Museum visit

It was New York City at its best: Sunday morning at the Guggenheim, with a private docent tour of ?Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso ? Time Truth and History.? . Seventeen INSEAD alumni and partners visited the exhibition and then brunched together at the Guggenheim Café.

The exhibition, with treasures from the Prado and around the world, ranks among the stars of the New York art scene this winter. The Guggenheim docent developed several themes of the paintings, which provided lively conversation around the brunch tables following the tour. Discussions of death and political power were balanced by exchanges on vegetables (including a fascination with the cardoon).

A huge thanks to Helen Warwick ?91J, who organized this special treat for the USIAA in celebration of the US national meeting weekend.

Anne Holbach, MBA '86, VP Human Resources

OC&C Career Seminar -- An Outstanding Success

OC&C founder Chris Outram?s (MBA 1977) White Paper presentation, ?Applying Private Equity Principlesto Public Companies" held in New York City on February 15 was certainly a big hit. It played to a capacity crowd of 60 INSEAD and NYBSC alumni gathered in one of the elegant conference rooms of The Penn Club. His presentation of private equity companies and their successes was most enlightening and elicited a number of questions and discussion afterwards. There is much public corporations can learn from private equity companies? focus on core business, costs, cash and managing people to attain success. The presentation was sandwiched between the pre-meeting cocktails and post-meeting social hour. Kudos to Chris who managed to make it to the meeting in spite of the delays inherent in flying in from London during the season?s worst winter storm.

Executive Recruiters Panel

Peter Felix (MBA '73) will chair a panel of executive recruiters covering the topic ?The Role of ExecutiveRecruiters in your Career Planning?in New York onWednesday, April 4. Peter is the President of the Association of Executive Search Consultants and has agreed to orchestrate the event by assembling some of the topnotch consultants specializing in recruiting for different industries. It promises to be another grand success when you can learn much about furthering your career, so mark your calendar now. Details to follow.

Amphi and Wharton Career Database -- Not in the Horizon

We have learnt from INSEAD that the proposed linkage between Amphi and Wharton career databases is not a feasible project at present because of Wharton?s reluctance to share. INSEAD may revisit this subject with Wharton in the future or might try to find another B-School to exchange databases with.

On Feb 1st, the Twin Cities group enjoyed a very pleasant evening at the home of Mary Hess, local VP for the alumni association. The group in Minneapolis has grown streadily from only 1 or 2 a few years ago. Check out the picture!

Many ideas were discussed to continue getting the group together, jointly attend local events of interest and also to collaborate with other alumni associations in the Twin Cities. Contact Mary Hess for more details on local activities.

The Chicago Alumni group at a really fun party on Saturday Feb 3rd, at the house of Regional President Brigitte Morel-Curran (MBA '78) in Chicago's Old Town. With a group spanning thirty years from the '75 promotion - Liska Blodgett - through our newest alumni Member, Jenifer Hayob, MBA '06, this was a lot of fun. We had the opportunity to catch up with old friends and welcome the Alumni newcomers in the Windy City. And windy it was! Drinks and a warm fire in the fireplace helped us confront the chilling 5F degrees outside.

INSEAD MBA Recruiting Tour

The INSEAD MBA Information session that was held last month was a great success! We had over 70 attendees (the seating room was completely filled up, there were folks standing in the back and we ran out of brochures - something that's never happened at an InfoSession). Great showing from our alumni - big thanks to Lonn Lee, Chloe Harford, Pete Day, Sunil Thambidurai, and Marcelo Prieto. Your comments and insights on your INSEAD experiences were invaluable to people as they decide whether or not INSEAD is right for them. And of course your enthusiasm for the school is truly inspiring - it really brought back such rich memories for me - national weeks, chateau parties, weekend travel trips, cubicle group work sessions, etc! Makes me want to go back!

Overall, the interest and awareness of INSEAD was very strong - we had to finally cut short all the questions to break for the cocktail hour. It's really great to see that we're making some inroads in terms of brand awareness in the US. The audience seemed very multi-cultural, and came from all over the Puget Sound region - mostly in their 20's & 30's. Some of the questions asked of alumni were:

  • What were your groups like? Can you share some experiences?
  • How do you think your experience at INSEAD has better prepared you for your current career?
  • In the US, INSEAD doesn't have the same recognition as a lot of the top American B-schools - can you comment on this?
  • How did you know that going back to business school was the right decision at that stage in your life?
  • Why should I consider applying to INSEAD now? (versus several years down the road)
  • How should rankings play into my decision?
  • What should I be working on now to increase my chances of acceptance?
  • Many more...

I would encourage all alumni to particpate in events of this nature in the future - it's satisfying giving something back to the school, and it's also a great trip down memory lane!
