USIAA Update

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Tommasso Trionfi

INSEAD always managed to surprise, stimulate and challenge me. 16 years after graduation (MBA 90D) it managed to do it again. I am certainly surprised, stimulated and challenged to be President of the US IAA. When I was talking to various active members of the USIAA I felt like the old days again. Smart, full of energy and fun people; I am thrilled to be able to share a portion of my life with you, and I am looking forward to the next three years to be part of this team, and meet many other INSEAD alumni.

Let me provide you with some background on me. I am the CEO of Wimba, a company I helped found at the end of 2000 in Sophia Antipolis, in the South of France, just north of Antibes. In 2004 we merged with an American company based in NYC and as part of the operation we moved to New York. Wimba is a technology company with a suite of education software products that bridges the divide between human interaction and technology to enable that people, not computers, to teach people. www.wimba.com. Our first customer was INSEAD on-line.

On a personal note I am Italian/Swiss German, married to a Danish lady, Dorte, an interior designer. We met in Paris and lived there for over 10 years. We have two children 7 and 4, born in France, who take up most of my spare time.

I am looking forward to being part of the US IAA team.

Regards,

Tommaso Trionfi, MBA '90D, President

Executive Search Panel

"The Role of Executive Recruiters in Career Planning" wasthe theme of a well-attended panel discussion held at The Penn Club in New York City on April 4. Peter Felix, CBE (MBA 1973), President of the Association of Executive Search Consultants, invited and moderated a lively guest panel of three executive search experts covering the following industries and functional areas.

  • Financial Services & General Management
  • Insurance, HR & Board Recruitment

INSEAD Career Contacts

If you belong to any enterprise that frequently or occasionally hires MBA?s, you may be willing to talk about your organization to our recent graduates aspiring to a career in the U.S. They would be interested in learning about your organization, its policies, practices, opportunities, etc. The dialog could be by phone or by e-mail, or even face-to-face, if it can be arranged. Please confirm your willingness to help our fellow alumni through communicating with them for a few minutes to an hour, by providing me your name, organization, phone # and e-mail address.

INSEAD Golf Day

Location:

The Breakers Rees Jones Course
1550 Flagler Parkway, West Palm Beach, FL
View Map | Find a Hotel
When: Saturday, May 19, 12:00pm
Greetings all:

It seems like only yesterday that many of us witnessed the back nine birdie blitz on the Rees Jones course that lead Nestor Zarate to his current reign as the INSEAD golfing champion of Florida.

On May 19th, Nestor returns to the scene of that legendary performance to defend his title and has invited all challengers.

Details as follows:
Date/time: May 19th, register at 12 to tee off from 12:30
Location: Rees Jones Course at the Breakers Resort, West Palm Beach
Fees: Green fees are $100/player, including cart

Nestor is hoping to beat a larger field this year so feel free to bring spouses/guests. The Rees Jones course is manageable for mixed abilities so do not feel that you have to shoot par golf in order to participate and enjoy. We will also devise a suitable handicapping system to make it interesting for all. We'll organize a dinner locally in the evening time.

Hopefully a good number can make it. Please respond soonest if you think you will go as we need to lock up tee times.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Dear all,

Happy Spring! We have a number of exciting events planned for May. Please take advantage of the incredible network that INSEAD offers by attending as many of them as possible.

This past April, INSEAD alumni hosted and attended a number of events in New York City sponsored by the INSEAD Alumni Association as well as INSEAD.

A warm thank you to those of you who attended our April 4th Exec Search Panel, moderated by Peter Felix(MBA 1973). We had some sobering lessons about managing your career. The key lesson being you cannot afford to wait around for the head hunters to hunt you! You have to do what you do very well AND get out and network.

As always, our Women?s Dinners are a great hit. To quote our fellow alumnae:

?I love the women?s dinners because no matter what year you graduated or what career path you are pursuing, you always find something inspiring at the dinners.?

?It is such an uplifting experience to be in the company of INSEAD alums in general and women in particular.?

?Mmmmm?Good wine.?

The April 18th Women?s Dinner was hosted by Melina Spadone (MBA 2000). A big thank you to Melina for having us at her place. For future dinners, please contact Maureen O?Regan (MBA 1983).

April 21stNY Cares Annual Volunteer Day. INSEAD was represented ? and we hope to have even more alumni sign up next year. A big thank you to Patrick Abouchalache (MBA 2001) for his tireless efforts in making a difference in the local community.

The INSEAD gala dinner on April 24th honoring John Thain and Jean Francois Theodore, of NYSE EuroNext with the Award for Transcultural Leadership, raised a substantial amount of money for the school. A small group of Alumni volunteers were on hand at the dinner, and Stephanie Lim (MBA 2005) did us all proud with her eloquent and passionate delivery on what makes INSEAD such a special school.

The lunch with DeanFrank Brown and incoming National INSEAD Alumni President, Tommaso Trionfi (MBA 1990) on April 25th, was also a great success. We had about 30 alumni show up at the lovely Scandinavia House. Tommaso, who is CEO and Founder of Wimba (www.wimba.com), a provider of education technologies and services that enable schools and institutions to deliver online and distance education courses effectively, said a few words about himself and his hopes for the Association. Frank gave us an update on INSEAD, and his vision for the school. Of particular interest to US alumni is confirmation that we are opening an INSEAD office in NYC in September 2007.

Thanks to all of you for your ideas and energy. We look forward to meeting more of you in person at our upcoming events.

Shivani, Matt and the Amazing IAA Volunteer Team

The best way to keep on track of what is going with INSEAD in the region on is to join the INSEAD Alumni Association (IAA).

The INSEAD Alumni Association is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization which is not funded by INSEAD. Without your membership dues we would cease to exist.

IAA membership costs $75 per year and defrays the costs associated with all events organized for YOUR benefit. Sign up today at www.inseadusa.com/nyc.
